METRC Sales Receipts: Edit, Void, Return, or Exchange?
Metrc edits, voids, and returns leave different records in a package’s history. Choose the action that matches what happened at the point of sale; do not treat a refund and a corrected receipt as interchangeable. The Metrc Wiki sales guidance describes these receipt behaviors and the resulting package-history entries.
Edit a receipt
Use the receipt edit workflow when an existing sale needs a correction. The Metrc Wiki says quantity changes to an existing receipt line appear in package history as a Sales Return. That history matters: it records a return event rather than removing the original sale from the receipt list.
Void a receipt
Voiding removes the receipt from the active sales-receipt area and creates a Removed Sales entry in package history. The source describes a void as an option when the receipt itself should no longer stand as recorded. Review the receipt and its downstream activity before choosing this path.
If one item was misrung and should return to sellable inventory, the Metrc Wiki says to delete that line from the receipt; if the entire receipt is wrong, void the receipt. The Wiki describes these actions as producing a Removed Sales entry rather than a Sales Return.
Record a return or exchange
The wiki’s return guidance says to record a returned item and its refund; for an exchange, it describes two transactions: the return/refund and a separate sale from the replacement package. Its example uses a negative quantity to record a refund in a receipt.
The source also distinguishes items that should be returned to sellable inventory from items that are defective, spoiled, or damaged. It notes that a Sales Return may not be eligible for resale under applicable rules. Confirm local product-disposition requirements before returning anything to available stock.
Check the package history
After the correction posts, review the package history for the expected entry—Sales Return or Removed Sales—and compare the receipt to the register transaction. Metrc guidance describes these workflows across its platform; rules for disposition, refunds, and resale remain subject to each market’s requirements.
